OAE stands for Otoacoustic Emissions — the natural sounds produced by the cochlea (inner ear). These sounds are an important indicator of cochlear hair cell function and can also provide insights into how other parts of the ear, including the auditory nerve, are working.
What is an OAE Test?
The OAE test checks how well your inner ear (cochlea) works. It measures tiny sound responses (emissions) generated by the hair cells inside the ear when they react to sound vibrations.

If the cochlea is healthy, these vibrations create an echo, which can be detected by a small probe.

If there is hearing loss, the echo will be weak or absent.
This makes OAE testing a reliable and painless way to check for hearing issues in newborns, infants, children, and adults.
How is OAE Testing Done?
There are two safe and comfortable newborn hearing screening tests:

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)

A tiny probe with an earphone and microphone is placed in the baby’s ear canal.

Soft clicking sounds are played.

If the inner ear is working normally, the probe records an echo returning from the cochlea.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

Sounds are played through small earphones.

Electrode stickers are placed on the baby’s head.

These record the activity of the hearing nerve and brainstem in response to sounds.

ABR helps measure the softest sound levels the ear can detect.
